TUCK, Horace Walter

1876 - 1951

Horace Walter Tuck was born at Heigham, Norwich on 11 October 1876, third child of Austin Tuck (1842-2 April 1928), a printer's machine minder, and his wife Eliza née Smith (1843-22 October 1932), who married at Norwich in 1865. In 1881, Horace was an 8-year-old, living at High Street, Heigham, Norwich with his parents, 38-year-old Austin and 37-year-old Eliza, with five siblings, Alfred Austin 15, Ellen Ann 13, George William 8, Lena 2 and newly born Maud Emma, all born at Norwich. Horace studied at Norwich Technical Institute and Norwich School of Art where he became friendly with Alfred Munnings, and at Borough Road Training College, Isleworth, West London. A painter of oil and watercolour landscapes of his native Norfolk, but also travelled to Dinan in Brittany, the Lake District, and other parts of Britain on painting expeditions. Vice-principal of Norwich School of Art and a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1904-1952 from Norwich and Sheringham. Tuck's work was regularly exhibited in Norwich and in London galleries, including in Bond Street. Horace Tuck also illustrated books on local subjects, including 'Inns and Taverns of Old Norwich' and apart from his earliest works, his paintings tend not to be dated. Horace married at Norwich on 29 December 1910, Elizabeth Mary Bailey (21 July 1874-3 February 1965), known as Bessie, who was one of his former pupils and an artist in her own right, they had no children. They originally lived at 71 College Road before moving to Branksome Road, Norwich until Tuck retired in 1939, when they moved to Far End, Knowle Road, Sheringham, Norfolk, from where Tuck, a retired art master, continued to paint until his death. Horace Walter Tuck died at Cromer Hospital, Norfolk on 16 October 1951, aged 75. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Society in 1933 from Branksome Road, Norwich, an oil 'An East Coast Farmyard' and in 1936, 'Landscape near Sheringham 1936'. A discovery of around 200 of his paintings and major exhibitions in Holt, Norfolk in 2006 and 2008, created renewed interest in this artist. Several of his works are in the collection of the Norwich Castle Museums and Art Galleries.
