READ, Simon
Simon Arthur Read was born at Bristol, Gloucestershire in May 1949, son of Wallace Frederick Read (18 August 1916-2 July 2007), an insurance surveyor, and his wife Doris Violet Louise née Scriven (1916-28 September 2002), who married at Bristol in 1941. Simon studied at Somerset College of Art 1968-1969, Leeds Arts University 1969-1973 and Chelsea School of Art 1973-1975 and won an Arts Council Major Award in 1978. He went on to teach at academies such as Slade School of Fine Art, Chelsea School of Art, North-East London Polytechnic, Reading University and Manchester Metropolitan University and Bath Academy of Art. An artist with a great deal of experience across several media and for many years enjoyed considerable success working through museum and gallery context including developing an expanded interpretation of photography. In 1980 he purchased a seagoing barge in Holland and brought it back to Suffolk and 'Boat Jacoba' at Lime Kiln Quay, Woodbridge, Suffolk served as his home and studio base and since then has travelling annually around the East Anglian Coast. External Examiner for M.A. Art and Environment, University of Falmouth 2011-2014. Simon has exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy with solo shows including Chelsea School of Art Gallery and Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Canada both 1984; Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh; Norsk Museum for Fotografi, Horten Norway; Kapil Jariwala Gallery, 2 Talfourd Place, London; Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich; Southwark Park Galleries, 1 Park Approach, Southwark Park, London and elsewhere.
