Barrie Houghton

Barrie J. Houghton was born at Shorne, Chatham, Kent in 1941, his mother's maiden name was Brown. Barrie commenced a business career before studying painting at St Martin's School of Art and, on a scholarship, in Paris. An artist who, after travelling extensively in Europe and North Africa, returned to work as a theatre designer in Canterbury before going to a drama school to become an actor. Barrie married at Stepney, London in 1979, Loesje Vere Sanders (born September 1947), a theatrical agent. In the 1990s, Barrie resumed painting and moved to Woodbridge, Suffolk where the Simon Carter Gallery gave him a solo show in 1995 which was followed by shows at the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich and other solo shows include Old Fire Engine House Gallery, Ely; Laragh, Dublin; Lynne Strover Gallery, Fen Ditton; Taplin Gallery, Woodbridge; Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh; the Singer & Friedlander Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London and elsewhere and has also exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Barrie has a studio at Pound Square, 1 North Hill, Woodbridge, Suffolk.
