BARKLAM, Harold

1912 - 2002

Harold Barklam was born at 202 Toll End Road, Tipton, Dudley, Staffordshire on 14 January 1912, second son of George Richard Barklam (8 April 1880-14 April 1952), an iron axle forger, and his wife Gertrude Ellen née Attwell (19 April 1882-28 April 1960), who married at Dudley in 1907. Harold studied at the Ryland Memorial School of Art, West Bromwich; the Royal College of Art 1933-1936, under Gilbert Spencer (1892-1979) and at the Birmingham School of Art 1936-1937. An artist and a teacher at various schools of art from 1937, only broken by war service 1940-1946, including schools at West Bromwich; Kidderminster; Lowestoft School of Arts and Crafts, Suffolk 1946-1950, and finally at Derby School of Art 1950-1976. He married at Wednesbury, Wolverhampton in 1939, Marjorie Hale (8 December 1907-September 1995) and they had one daughter. A painter in oil and watercolour and completed several mural paintings as well as pictures of stately homes for 'English Life' Publications of Derby. A member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1947-1950 from Lowestoft and exhibited at Derby and Birmingham Art Galleries and elsewhere. Harold Barklam lived at 9 Eastwood Drive, Littleover, Derby and died at Royal Manor Nursing Care Home, Derby on 24 February 2002. His wife Marjorie was also an artist, and they held a joint exhibition of their work at Glastonbury Experience, Glastonbury in April 1980.
