TUSHINGHAM, Sidney

1884 - 1968

Sidney Tushingham was born at Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent on 31 March 1884, eldest child of Edward Tushingham (12 February 1857-7 November 1940), a potter's cashier, and his wife Margaret Dinah née Wood (16 June 1864-23 July 1940), who married at Wolstanton, Staffordshire in 1883. Sidney was educated at Hanley Higher Grade Board School (Boys) School, Staffordshire in 1896, Burslem School of Art and progressed to the Royal College of Art where he received his diploma in 1910. He commenced his artistic career as a china painter and in 1901, a 17-year-old potter's artist, living at 31 Lorne Street, Burslem with his parents, 44-year-old Edward and 36-year-old Margaret, with sibling sister Doris Marguerite 4. Sidney married at Fulham, London in 1913, Ella Marie Westlake (21 January 1889-1967). An Associate of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers in 1915 and worked as a vase painter at Royal Doulton in 1922, and as he established his career as a society painter and etcher, specialised in rustic scenes of villages and small-town life also becoming known for his etchings of pre-war Britain, Italy, and Spain. He exhibited at Abbey Gallery; Brook Street Art Gallery; Chenil New Gallery; Connell & Sons Gallery; Fine Art Society; Glasgow Institute of Fine Art; Glasgow Institute of Fine Art; International Society; Liverpool Walker Art Gallery; the Royal Academy; the Royal Scottish Academy and, at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1923, he exhibited a dry point 'A Boy of Tuscania'. In 1939, an artist & art master, living at 'Norbeck', Bucknell Road, Bicester, Oxfordshire when his wife was living at 14 Marsh Avenue, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire with her invalid parents. Sidney Tushingham died at 18 Ormerod Court, Haywards Heath, Cuckfield, West Sussex on 23 August 1968. The author of 'Etchings & Dry-Points' (1922). His etchings were published in small editions with most of his published etchings being detailed in two catalogues published by James Connell & Sons Ltd, Art Gallery in London and Glasgow.
