BARON, Karen
Karen Baron is a Suffolk born artist who graduated B.A. (hons) in Fine Art. Karen has been living in North Yorkshire for over twenty but has moved back to the Suffolk coast with her family and began a new series of works inspired by the coastal views and endless skies. When creating a piece of work she works directly from the landscape or uses her own photography for reference, with most of her paintings beginning with thin washes of oil paint and charcoal. Using organic oil paints and natural thinners and brush cleaner, paint is then layered, which builds texture, and finally bursts of pastel create soft, diffused tones. Karen has had several studio spaces with her first was the 'horsebox' on top of a steep Nidderdale hill, but wasn't practical during the long, wet, winter months in Yorkshire after which she set up a new space with gallery in the King Street Workshop complex in Pateley Bridge in North Yorkshire which was part of a working group of creatives including jewellers, sculptors, glass blowers etc. Having returned to live in Suffolk she now has her studio in the summerhouse in her back garden. Karen has exhibited at Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate; David Harrison Art Gallery, Ripon; Canvas & Grit, Pateley Makers Yard in Pateley Bridge, Nidderdale; Aldeburgh Gallery, Suffolk and she is a member of Walberswick Open Studios.
