TOLHOUSE ART EXHIBITION
The Tolhouse Gaol Great Yarmouth was originally built in the 1100s, and served as a prison for the borough for around seven hundred years. The Tolhouse is one of the oldest civic buildings in the United Kingdom and has a history including possible use as a private merchant home or Cinque Ports Host House, followed by documented use as a prison, courtroom, council chamber and police station before its closure in 1882. The building was then saved from a sale or demolition and became a library, with the museum being added later, the opening ceremony was on 18 June 1895. After being damaged by bombs during the Second World War, the Tolhouse was rebuilt and reopened as a museum on 24 June 1960. Suffolk artists included in the Tolhouse Art Exhibition in August-September 1901 include William Ayrton; Stephen John Batchelder; Winifred Buxton; Walter Dexter; Alfred Munnings; Mabel Eva Saw; Emma Thornhill and others.
