BUXTON, Winifred

1869 - 1954

Winifred Buxton was born at Marylebone, London on 4 September 1869, eldest daughter of Henry Edmund Buxton (22 January 1844-2 November 1905), local director of Barclays Bank, and his wife Mary Rosalind Upcher (1848-4 July 1918), only daughter of Revd Abbot Upcher, who married at Kirby Cane Church, Norfolk on 16 October 1867, her sister was Rosalind Upcher Buxton. In 1891, Winifred was a 21-year-old living at Fritton Decoy, Fritton, Suffolk with her parents, 47-year-old Henry and 43-year-old Mary and her four siblings. Winifred studied art in Paris and was a member and exhibitor at the Norwich Art Circle 1895-1953 from various East Anglian addresses including Fritton, Suffolk; Attlebridge, Norfolk and Snape, Suffolk. She married at Fritton on 28 November 1901, Col Arthur Charles Malleson Waterfield (4 July 1866-25 October 1943) in the Indian Service and she went to India with her soldier husband but had returned by 1911, when a 41 year old married woman, living at Litcham, Swaffham, Norfolk with four daughters, Barbara 7, Penelope 4, Rosalind 2, all born in India and 5 month old Philippa, who was born at Litcham. Winifred painted under the name of Buxton and exhibited at the Dudley Gallery and the Society of Women Artists 1898-1901 from The Decoy, then under her married name of Waterfield. A watercolourist who, as Mrs Arthur Waterfield, exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club in 1933 from Ash Tree Farm, Attlebridge, Norfolk, a watercolour 'Bibury Hill' and became a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1943-1954, exhibiting as Mrs Winifred Waterfield, from Snape, near Saxmundham, Suffolk in 1943, five works 'Pansies', 'Study of Willows', 'Canal Bridge', 'Morston, Norfolk' and 'Harvest in Norfolk', in 1944 'Near Bridgenorth' and 'Willie Lott's Cottage', in 1945 watercolours 'Bosham, Sussex' and 'White House, Blantbroughton, Linconshire', two in 1947 'River Test at Longparish' and 'Wisteria in a Suffolk Garden', two in 1949 'The Marsh' and 'Lupin Harvest, Snape', two in 1951 'The White Cottage' and 'Borwick Farm, Estwaite Lake'; two in 1952 'A Ford in Norfolk' and 'Saturday Evening and last exhibited in 1953 whe she had four watercolours on show. She also exhibited at the Women's International Art Club, Walker Gallery Liverpool, and other venues in East Anglia. She later signed her work 'W.W.'. In 1939, she was living at Grouts Lane, Erpingham, Norfolk. Winifred Waterfield was of Wadd House, Snape, Saxmundham, Suffolk when she died at The Cottage Hospital, Aldeburgh on 22 September 1954, aged 85.
