SAW, Mabel Eva
Mabel Eva Saw was born at Greenwich, London on 12 September 1866, youngest child of Samuel Saw (18 January 1830-18 March 1920), an attorney & solicitor, and his first wife Matilda née Bassett (26 September 1825-18 December 1873), who married at Woolwich, London on 25 June 1852. Samuel married secondly at Lewisham Parish Church on 9 December 1876 Mary Merideth Connorton (1847-10 May 1929), daughter of Thomas Connorton of Blackheath, and had further issue. In 1871, Mabel was a 4-year-old, living at 20 Upper Park Street, Greenwich with her parents 41-year-old Samuel and 45-year-old Matilda and five siblings, Matilda 17, Amy Clara 12, Frances Mary 10, Francis Albert 9 and Henry William 5, all born at Greenwich, but her mother died in 1873. An artist in watercolour and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1899-1922 and exhibited from 143 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich in 1899 'A Dutch Type', 'Memories' and 'At Borrowdale', in 1900 from 39 St Margaret's Green, Ipswich 'At the Docks, Ipswich', 'Loch Vennachar', 'The Point of Honour', 'St Margaret's Green' and a portrait study 'Maisie', in 1901 from 17 Glencoe Road, Blackheath, London 'Wenhaston', 'A Suffolk Field' and 'Walberswick' and in 1902 from the High School, Ipswich, 'Whitby from Bridge Steps', 'Staithes', 'Whitby Boats' and 'Low Tide, Whitby'. As a teacher she taught in several towns up and down the country and in 1911, a 44-year-old art mistress for Preston Education Committee, living at 3 Cobham Street, Preston, Lancashire. She exhibited about 36 works at Ipswich with her last exhibitions at Ipswich were from the Secondary School for Girls at Dereham, Norfolk 'The Mill Race, Cambridge' and 'At Looe'. In 1939, Mabel Eva Saw was a retired governess, of 110 Huntington Road, Cambridge, living at 57 Paxton House, Bath Road, Reading, Berkshire, where she died on 30 October later that year, aged 73, she was unmarried.
