STODDART, Gabrielle

Garielle M. Stoddart was born at Brighton, Sussex in 1943, daughter of Donald Maillard Stoddart (1913-2001), a sales director, and his wife Hilda Gertrude née Hunt (1908-1965), who married at Brighton in 1941. Gabrielle studied at Hornsey College of Art and at Brighton College of Art, now the University of Brighton and in 1973 qualified as a teacher. Gabrielle had a successful career as a freelance illustrator in London winning many commissions for book illustration, advertising, editorial and fashion work, which she combined this with various teaching posts. Gabrielle married at Brighton in 1966, Martin A. Baker but continued to work under the name of Gabrielle Stoddart. In 1987 she moved to Suffolk and, combined with her other work, had the opportunity to paint using mixed media with much of her work starting with black ink laid in free-flowing form or line. Gabrielle is the author and illustrator of several volumes of books and is a member of Bury St Edmund's Art Society and has exhibited at the Ariel Gallery, Lavenham; Elsey's Gallery, Bury St Edmund's; Aldeburgh Gallery and with Artworks East and elsewhere.
