Leeds Beckett University

Leeds Mechanics Institute was founded in 1824 and later became the Leeds Institute of Science, Art and Literature and in 1927 was renamed Leeds College of Technology. In 1970, the college merged with Leeds College of Commerce, which was founded 1845 and was part of Leeds College of Art and Yorkshire College of Education and Home Economics, forming Leeds Polytechnic and in 1976, James Graham College and the City of Leeds College of Education joined Leeds Polytechnic. In 1987, the Polytechnic became one of the founding members of the Northern Consortium of Universities, formerly known as Leeds Metropolitan University. In September 2014, its name was changed to Leeds Beckett University. Suffolk artists who were tutors or alumni at Leeds include Stuart Thomas Coy, Alistair Crawford, Bo Ditlefsen, Christopher David Mcelhatton, Rachel Pedder-Smith and Ed Stokes.
