STRAND GALLERY
Strand Gallery has been at 164 High Street Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast since 1997.The Strand Gallery shew an eclectic and idiosyncratic range of art, reflecting director Ron Howell's enthusiasms and friendships. Paintings and prints by modern British artists such as Terry Frost (13 October 1915-1 September 2003), Geoffrey Cyril Petts Clarke, Margaret Thomas and Sandra Betty Blow (14 September 1925-22 August 2006) are shown alongside those by younger artists such as Tessa Newcomb and Jo Gorner (1961-), as well as pieces by established makers such as jeweller Wendy Anne Jopling Ramshaw (26 May 1939-9 December 2018) and sculptor Guy Taplin (1939-). The gallery looked after the sculptor Jonathan Clarke and had curated shows in Venice, the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth and most recently a touring exhibition in Denmark for the Danish Cultural Institute. Other Suffolk artists who exhibited at the Strand Gallery include David Campbell Baldry; Carl Borges; Geoffrey Cyril Petts Clarke; Jonathan Clarke; Michael Flint; Diana Marsden; Helen Napper; Maryanne Nicholls; Ann Oakley and Robert Sadler. This Gallery was closed.
The second Strand Gallery at 164 High Street Aldeburgh was established in 2020 by renowned curator Emma Bull and is known for its focus on contemporary British artists, with a particular emphasis on mixed media, painting, and sculpture. The gallery features a diverse roster of talented artists, including the likes of David Hockney, Tracey Emin, and Grayson Perry but the Strand Gallery’s mission is to support emerging artists and foster a dialogue about artistic expression within the community. The gallery aims to attract art enthusiasts, collectors, and casual visitors alike, offering a welcoming environment where art can be appreciated and discussed. Apart from its rotating exhibitions, Strand Gallery hosts workshops and community events aimed at engaging the public with the world of art in the Aldeburgh community.
