Robert Sadler

William Robert Sadler was born at Falmouth House, Newmarket, Suffolk on 20 February 1909, second son of Harry William Sadler (1876-27 April 1926), a racehorse trainer, and his wife Ada Lane (13 April 1877-28 June 1963), eldest daughter of late John Thomas Lane of Cambridge, who married at St Mary's Church, Newmarket on 5 March 1906. In 1911, Robert as he was known, was a 2-year-old, living at Falmouth House, Exning, Newmarket, with his parents, Harry William 35 and Ada 34, with sibling brother Harry John 4, also born at Newmarket, they retained five indoor servants. Robert was educated at a boarding school Eastbourne College, from there he went on to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge to read Mechanical Engineering. At Cambridge he joined the University Air Squadron, where he learned to fly and in 1930 was commissioned into the Royal Air Force, retiring as a Group Captain in 1954. He married at Trumpington, Cambridgeshire on 20 February 1935, Madeleine Hannah Leach (1905-7 January 2011), widow of Felix Leach, jun. a Newmarket trainer. On his retirement from the R.A.F. he took up painting and attended Heatherley School of Fine Art, the Corcoran Gallery School, Washington, USA and the Cambridge Technical College. A member of the Winchester Art Club and the Cambridge Society of Painters and Sculptors and had mixed shows at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; John Moores Exhibition, Liverpool; Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts, Belfast; the New English Art Club Centenary Exhibition. He also exhibited at the Trafford Gallery and Ackermann's, 27 Mortimer Street, London; New Vision Centre Gallery, London; Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden, Essex and elsewhere in the provinces and in France. William Robert Sadler lived at 39 The Terrace, Aldeburgh, Suffolk where he died on 21 August 2001. On his death his archive of paintings passed to his son Robin Sadler who holds exhibitions of his father's works at the Strand Gallery, Aldeburgh; [[Re+New Gallery,6544]], Woodbridge and at Hugh Pilkington's Edge Gallery, near Orford, all in Suffolk.
