BATH SOCIETY OF ARTISTS

The Bath Society of Artists was founded in 1904 with twenty-six foundation members. It has always a link with the City with the Mayor and members of the Victoria Art Gallery Committee as honorary members and the Director of the Gallery is an ex-officio member of the executive Committee. Many distinguished 20th century painters have exhibited and taken an interest in the Bath Society of Artists including Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent, Philip Wilson Steer, Gilbert Spencer, William Scott, Patrick Heron, Mary Fedden, Adrian Heath, David Inshaw, Sylvia Packard and many others and today the membership around 120. The annual exhibitions, which are open to non-members, is held in the Victoria Art Gallery for five or six weeks during the spring and summer. For many members it has been the main function, but the Society also organises receptions, lectures, private views, loan exhibitions and a members' exhibition which is held during the winter. Suffolk artists who have exhibited with the Bath Society of Artists include Gabriel Joan Carruthers, Christine Lester, Sylvia Packard and Patricia Theodorou.
