CARRUTHERS, Gabriel Joan
As Gabriel Joan Heath, she was born at Menwinnion, Cornwall on 1 December 1915, youngest daughter of Frank Gascoigne Heath (23 January 1873-18 June 1936), an artist, and his wife Jessica Florence née Doherty (14 April 1883-25 December 1967), also an artist, who married at Paul, Penzance, Cornwall on 30 March 1910. Gabriel married at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire in 1941, George Carruthers and painted under the name of Joan Carruthers. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1959-1963 and exhibited from High Green, Brooke, Norfolk in 1958, two oils 'Banton Loch, Kilsyth, Scotland' and 'Pulls Ferry, Norwich', in 1959 'Elders grow by the Pool' and 'Early Spring, Horstead Mill', in 1960 'Farm Pond, Hales Green', 'Summers Day, Beccles' and 'Autumnal Road' and her last in 1961 when she had on show 'Shotesham Common' and 'Autumn Tints' all oils. Also, a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1957-1961 from Brooke, Norfolk and from Salisbury, Wiltshire. She exhibited her work widely, including at the Royal Academy; the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal West of England Academy, the Society of Women Artists, and the Bath Society of Artists. Gabriel Joan Carruthers died at Salisbury on 20 August 2006.
