The Digby Gallery at the Mercury Theatre, Balkerne Gate, Colchester, Essex is a theatre which contains a studio for exhibition hire. When Robert Digby founded the local repertory company, the hall was converted to a small theatre, incorporating the rear hall for stage space, etc. In 1925 the main space, now known as the Albert Hall, was converted to an assembly room for concerts, etc., and an art gallery in the High Street and this arrangement lasted until 1972 when the Mercury Theatre opened. Digby Gallery is a vibrant space dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary art. Known for its dynamic programming and commitment to emerging artists, the gallery serves as a platform for innovative works that challenge and inspire. Founded in 1999, the gallery has developed a reputation for showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions, from painting and sculpture to multimedia installations. Suffolk artists who have exhibited at the Mercury Gallery/Digby Gallery include Anthony Claude Atkinson, Valerie Bonnett, Hugh Verschoyle Cronyn, Charles Debenham, Andrew Wilson Dodds, Diane Griffiths, Maurice Alfred Kelly, Eleonora Knowland, Wyndham Lloyd, Joy Pirkle, Stella Rankin, Michelle Ranson, Hazel Theobald, Borin Van Loon, Harold Warner and Bryan Whiteley.
