Monica Petzal

Monica Petzal was born in London on 22 June 1953, daughter of Harry Petzal (28 September 1908-1991) and his wife Hanna Lore née Isakowitz (15 July 1915-1986), daughter of Erich Isakowitz, a dental surgeon of 26 Lyndhurst Road, Belsize Park, who married in 1943. Monica was educated at the North London Collegiate School 1964–1971 and studied at the Kingston University for her B.A. (hons) in Fine Art 1976 and at the University of Sussex for a Master's in History of Art 1977, the Royal College of Art for a Master's in art history at the University of Sussex for a Master's in Fine Art (Painting) and in 2001 as a printmaker at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts. She has worked as a tutor in art schools, a critic, including a long stint at 'Time Out' and for 14 years as the Director of the Foundation for Women’s Art. Her projects included co-curating British Printmaking Japan, an exhibition of 39 British printmakers at the City of Kyoto Museum and other venues in Japan. Monica was for many years a trustee of the Printmakers Council and the Vice-chair of the Dresden Trust which builds bridges of friendship and cooperation between the people of Britain and Dresden following the destruction of the historic centre by British bombing in 1945. Monica has shown her prints and works on paper at diverse venues, including the Drawings show at The Hayward, the Whitechapel Open and the R K Burt Gallery, London. Her exhibitions include Originals 10 at the Mall Galleries; Printmakers Council at the Bankside Gallery; ‘Lost for Words‘ at University College London Hospitals Arts; Pie Factory, 5 Broad Street, Margate; Kings College and Regents College London; at the International Printmaking Bienale in Duoro; the Kreuzkirche Gallery in Dresden, Germany and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry. In 2006 she opened a gallery, Printroom, in Hampstead, which dealt in contemporary printmaking whichi n 2014, together with her husband, retired psychiatrist and writer Dr Chris Maloney, moved to Printroom Studio at Sweffliing near Stowmarket in Suffolk and from November 2023 the space is used for events and selected exhibitions. Monica Petzal is also a trustee of the Curwen Print Study Centre.
