SMITH, Brian Argent
Brian Argent Smith was born at Tiptree, Essex in 1937, his mother's maiden name was Hall. Brian was educated locally and studied at Colchester School of Art in 1953 under Czech sculptor Franta Belsky (1921-2000) and gained a National Diploma in Design in 1957. He also studied under Nigel Henderson (1917-1985) and Carel Weight (1908-1997). After National Service in the Royal Air Force, Smith earned his living as a photographer whilst developing a career as an artist and had his own gallery in Dedham, Essex. He married at Colchester in 1974 Carol A. née Elliott. Brian was a member of the Colchester Art Society and painted the seasonal changes of the East Anglian landscapes and worked in a variety of media including oils, pastels and watercolours but was better known for his pastel works. He exhibited at Minories, Colchester; Digby Gallery, Colchester; The Gallery Holt, Norfolk; Hayletts Gallery, Maldon and in London at Mall Galleries; the Medici Gallery and at the Royal Academy from Blacksmith's Corner, The Street, Lower Layham, near Ipswich IP7 5LZ in 2018 an oil painting 'The Shelley Road'. Brian Argent Smith died on 4 June 2025, aged 87 years.
