HEWLETT, Jane
As Jane Elizabeth Dawson, she was born in March 1954, and married at Westminster, London in 1980 Thomas Anthony Hewlett and works as Jane Hewlett. Jane studied at the University of East Anglia for her B.A. degree in Fine Art and at City and Guilds of London Art School for a postgraduate diploma in Fine Art. Jane is a contemporary painter living and working in Woodbridge, Suffolk with her studio overlooks the River Deben, which provides the setting for many of her paintings. Most of Jane's work begins with plain-air watercolour sketches to which she then applies up to seven coats of handmade gesso, traditionally made from rabbit skin glue and Gesso di Bologna. This, combined with oil paint applied with a palette knife, produces her distinctive impasto and clarity of colour. She has exhibited at Ainscough Contemporary Art, Chelsea; Portland Gallery, 3 Bennet Street, St James's, London; Jonathan Cooper Gallery, London; Thompson's Gallery, London; artEast and Gallery East, Woodbridge.
