WATKINS, Stephen

Stephen James Watkins was born in Southampton, Hampshire on 17 February 1976, son of Brian M. Watkins and his wife Shirley F. Medwin, who married at Bexley, Kent in 1968. He studied for his B.A. (hons) Architecture, Postgraduate Diploma in Built Resources Studies, Full Diploma in Architecture. An R.I.B.A. qualified architect working in many senior positions in the U.K. including BDP Southampton, Hampshire and Simon Cooper Design. He married in Hampshire in 2005 Verity Shepherd and they relocated to Doha, Qatar when they formed Watkins Artwork. Stephen, with 16 years in the industry spent nine years on a multibillion-dollar project at Sidra hospital in Doha, Qatar. Whilst Stephen was living in Hampshire, in 2003 he started painting skylines on canvas and exhibited some of his work a gallery in Southsea, Portsmouth which were all sold. Stephen works in acrylic paint on canvas and after their move to Doha the ever-changing skyline was a great inspiration to Stephen and his work evolved from colourful skylines into arabesque abstract designs. He has produced skylines of many cities around the world and to date has completed commissions in Houston, Texas and in London, Paris, New York, Cape Town, Doha, Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland with his first solo exhibition in 2016 at The Corridor, Grand Hyatt Hotel, Doha. In 2017, Stephen and his wife with their three daughters, returned to the UK, relocating to Framlingham in Suffolk where he is a member of the Suffolk Open Studios. From Suffolk he has exhibited at Brick Lane Gallery, London; Sussex Art Faire at Goodwood; the Aldeburgh Gallery, Aldeburgh and Sentinel Gallery, Wivenhoe.
