COCHRANE, Jane
Jane Sylvia Cochrane was born in January 1958. As Jane Tromans she married at Warminster, Wiltshire in 2005 Dr Peter Cochrane (born July 1946) and paints as Jane Cochrane. After a career in government policy and in management consultancy and, although painting for most of her adult life, only became a professional artist in 2015. Jane completed a Master's degree in Fine Arts at Norwich University of the Arts which enabled her to develop the paper-inlay technique that now defines her practice. Jane creates luminous geometric abstracts through a distinctive paper-inlay technique, a slow, meditative process where hundreds of hand-cut shapes are precisely inlaid to build each composition. Every piece begins with painting watercolour papers in graduated tones and with hand-cut geometric forms, each selected for its exact colour and tonal quality, inlay them to create work with unusual depth and optical vibration. Some pieces, like Yayoi Kusama (1929-) the Japanese artist, involve hundreds of individual elements, others explore bold, simplified geometry, using gradation of tones to create form. The technique bridges contemporary art and skilled traditional craft with patience, precision, and the transformative power of colour and light. A member of the [Colchester Art Society,5376]], the Ipswich Arts Association and of Suffolk Open Studios, when she exhibits from her studio at Willow Barn, East Lane, Ufford, Woodbridge, Suffolk also showing at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours at the Mall Galleries, London; Art on the Prom at Felixstowe, Suffolk; George Farnham Gallery, Saxmundham; Dedham Art and Craft Centre, Essex; Woodbridge Art Club; Art Fair East and elsewhere.
