STOKES, Telfer

Telfer D. Stokes was born Petts Park, Little Park, St Ives, Cornwall on 3 October 1940, son of artist & art critic Adrian Durham Stokes (27 October 1902-15 December 1972) and his first wife Margaret Nairne Mellis, who married at Paddington, London in 1938 and in 1939 they were living at St Ives, Cornwall with Ben Nicholson and his wife Barbara Hepworth. Mellis and Stokes divorced in 1947, and he subsequently married her younger sister the ceramic artist Ann Stokes. Telfer studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, and in 1962 won a Beckmann Fellowship for his postgraduate at Brooklyn Museum Art School, New York. In 1964, a part-time teacher at Reading Art School, afterwards at Bath Academy of Art, Corham and exhibited paintings in London through the 60s culminating in a show at the Serpentine Gallery in 1971 which was of his work made with pigment, fibre glass & strip lighting. In 1971 he founded the imprint 'Weproductions' (Artist Books) and from 1974, with Helen Douglas, publishing some twenty books 1972-2002, but in 1976 they moved from London to Deuchar Mill, Scotland where a printing press was set up in 1979, Helen Douglas continued to make and publish from Deuchar Mill. In 2002, Telfer moved to Lydstep House, Constitution Hill, Southwold, Suffolk, the home of his mother, now Margaret Davison (1914-2009), to bathe in the sea in the mornings and to make sculptural objects which he exhibited at Kettle's Yard Cambridge Open, also exhibiting at North House Gallery, Manningtree and at Austin/Desmond Fine Art, also a contributor to the 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2013 'Clef Pallet'.
