COURTENEY, Ronald
William Ronald Courteney was born at Pontefract, Yorkshire on 21 September 1922, son of Gerard Courteney (11 July 1891-1970) and his wife Ivy May née Ellis (14 May 1902-1989), who married at Heigham St Philip, Norwich on 21 September 1921. Ronald studied at Norwich School of Art 1947-1951 and at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art 1951-1952. As Ronald Courteney, a painter and art teacher who lived at Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk for many years. A founder member of the Suffolk Group of Artists, a council member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle from Norwich 1951-1995 and elected chairman of the Norwich Twenty Group in 1962. He married at Norwich in 1955, Joan A. Miller and they emigrated to New Zealand in the 1990s. A landscape painter in oil and watercolour and regularly painted along the River Blyth, colourful work evolving into geometrical abstract. He exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing at the Royal Society of British Artists and various exhibitions in East Anglia and since his move has exhibited regularly in New Zealand. William Ronald Courteney died in New Zealand on 17 July 2011.
