UNGLESS, Bill
William Frederick Ungless was born at Ipswich in 1934, son of William Frederick Ungless (25 August 1896-28 November 1968), a master butcher, and his wife Adelaide Rosetta née Baker (2 July 1898-6 December 1981), who married at Ipswich in 1923 and in 1939 were living at 116 Fore Street, Ipswich. A pupil architect at Johns, Slater and Haward in Ipswich during which time he also enrolled as a student at the Ipswich School of Art, attending the studios of Colin Moss and Bernard Reynolds. Bill, as he was known, completed his studies at the Faculty of Architecture at [University College,6069]], London, with lectures and life drawing at the adjoining Slade School of Fine Art, where he was awarded the Sir Bannister Fletcher Medal as the best student. This was followed by two years working in Milan and Berlin, then in the office of Sir Denys Lasdun (1914-2001) on the design of the University of East Anglia. He set up an architectural practice in London with Michael Neylan (1931-2012) as Neylan & Ungless 1964-1998, the practice wining competitions in England and The Netherlands, a Civic Trust Award, and a Department of Environment Good Design in Housing Medal. He also lectured, taught, and examined at Universities in England and Europe, publishing criticism and articles in professional journals. Alongside his architectural practice he has always drawn and painted and, since retirement, has become engrossed with the coastal landscape around Walberswick, Suffolk. He married at Reading, Berkshire in 1959, Isabel Katharine Dilks (born 1937) and they lived at Winton, Main Street, Southwold, Suffolk. Bill has exhibited with the Suffolk Coastal Group and the Southwold Art Circle and had a one-man exhibition of his work at The Cut Halesworth in 2012.
