Peter Polaine

Peter David Polaine was born at West Ham, Essex on 30 April 1937, son of Horace George William Polaine (23 November 1910-9 February 1969), a commercial artist who also exhibited at the Royal Academy, and his wife Ivy May née Conner (19 January 1915-2003), who married at West Ham in 1933 and in 1939 were living at 68 Cherry Tree Rise, Chigwell, Essex. Peter was educated at Harlow College and studied at Walthamstow School of Art 1954-1959 under Stuart Ray (1916-1985) and Margaret Green (1925-2003). Peter married in SW Essex in 1964, Betty A. Dines and they moved to East Anglia, they have two sons. His printmaking and painting ran alongside each other, but he preferred woodcut printmaking which gave him an opportunity to create strong images pushing the boundaries of printmaking. Peter used a variety of woods which became addictive, whenever he saw a piece of wood, he looked at the grain and possibilities and was influenced by the German Expressionist, especially Die Brücke Group and Der Blaue Reiter Group and used an antique Columbian or smaller Albion printing press. He was a member of Sudbourne Park Printmakers; Colchester Art Society; Essex Art Group and of the Ipswich Art Society where he exhibited from Gardener's Cottage, Broke Hall Park, Nacton, Ipswich in 2006, an oil on canvas 'Goodbye Moon' and a woodcut 'Running Hare'. Peter exhibited at The Royal Academy also showing in several London galleries including Mall Galleries and Bankside Gallery and exhibited frequently in East Anglian galleries including Buckenham Galleries, Southwold. In Germany, Peter Polaine has a strong following of private collectors of his woodcuts, and they are in permanent collections in America, Australia, Belgium, and Malaysia. Peter David Polaine died on 12 March 2022 being survived by his wife and two sons.
