Susan Laughlin

As Susan D. Mitchell, was born at Ipswich in 1962, daughter of Brian Eric Mitchell and his wife Pauline B. née Dickerson, who married at Ipswich in 1961. Susan studied at Ipswich School of Art 19931996, gaining a BTEC in General Art & Design, and at Norwich School of Art and Design 1996-2000, being awarded a B.A.(Hons)in Fine Art and an M.A. in Fine Art (Painting). She married at Ipswich in 1986, Christopher Laughlin, and paints under the name of Susan Laughlin. A part-time lecturer at The College of West Anglia 2002-2006 and a Support Services at City College Norwich, being a self-employed artist. Working by initially pouring, rolling & splattering, ultimately it is impossible to have total control over what the paint is doing. She then builds the image up by applying many layers of glazing, so that it slowly evolves, echoes, resulting in an ambience and appearance, so each layer of glazing is an integral part of the final image. The inspiration for her work comes from the surrounding countryside whilst also drawing upon folklore, mythology and ancient history. She has exhibited at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold; Suffolk Open Studios; Blackthorpe Barns, Rougham, Bury St Edmund's; Harleston Gallery, Norfolk; Norwich Castle Museum Gallery; The Lloyd Gill Gallery, Weston-super-Mare; The Cut Open, Halesworth, Suffolk and the Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh. After a period in the Breckland in Norfolk with her two children, she returned to Suffolk with her studio at Mendham. www.susanlaughlin.weebly.com
