HERIZ-SMITH, Patrick Ambrose Lewis

1920 - 2011

Patrick Ambrose Lewis Heriz-Smith was born at Christchurch, Hampshire on 11 November 1920, son of Revd Eustace Edward Arthur Heriz-Smith (15 November 1887-9 June 1983) and his wife Frances Joan née Ewer (17 September 1886-16 April 1961), of Bidna Natham, Devon, who married at St Peter's Church, Cranley Gardens, Kensington, London on 21 December 1911. Patrick studied at The Reimann School, a private art school which was founded in Berlin in 1902 by Albert Reimann (1874-1976), and re-established in Regency Street, Pimlico, London in January 1937, where he was tutored by Leonard Rosoman (1913-2012), Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) and the principal, Austin Cooper (1890-1964). Reimann's was closed at the start of the Second World War when Patrick's studies continued at the Slade School of Art in London where he met his future wife Audrey Elizabeth Pilkington. His linear and fractured style of drawing, influenced by futurism and expressionism, did not meet with approval, when he and Audrey were able to share any disenchantment, they felt with their studies. Patrick was offered the post of Art Master at Gordonstoun and in April 1942, he and Audrey married at St Michael's Church, Oxford. After Gordonstoun, firstly at Llandinam, Montgomeryshire, Mid Wales during the war and afterwards in Scotland, in 1947 they moved to King Alfred School in Germany. In 1954 the family moved to Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, near Ipswich where Patrick was again Head of Art and was one of the few exponents in Britain of diamond-point engraving on glass. In 1961, Patrick and Audrey purchased the Clock House, Bruisyard, Suffolk where from 1964 they converted areas into art studios for local and residential users as Clock House Studios. From 1979 Audrey and their daughter Bridget Heriz-Smith ran the studios and the facilities were expanded to include an etching workshop, sculpture studio and bronze-casting foundry run by the sculptor Jane Truzzi-Franconi. In 1988 Patrick and Audrey moved to Resolven, West Glamorgan. Patrick Ambrose Lewis Heriz-Smith died at Exeter on 1 February 2011, leaving a wife and six children.
