Nettie Burnett

Nettie Burnett was born in 1949 and, growing up during the 1960s was influenced by the artistic atmosphere of the time. She studied at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto in 1973-1974 and her studies continued at the Wimbledon School of Art in London 1974-1978, obtaining a B.A. (hons) in Sculpture, then took a post-graduate course at the Norwich School of Art & Design 1983-1985 obtaining an M.A. in Fine Arts. Nettie lectured in the master's degree courses at Goldsmiths College, London and at Norwich School of Art. At University College Suffolk, Nettie gave lessons in drawing and sculpture and was Director of 'Foundation Studies' at Suffolk College in the Arts and Visuals programme at the University College at Ipswich 1991-2001. Her work can be detailed and the mark-making process prolonged and comprehensive providing a meditative, comprehensive approach. By comparison, other drawings are created from her walks and train journeys where the small rapid gestural sketches are enlarged to create expressive and energetic renderings of the natural world. A former member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from 7 Redan Street, Ipswich in 1997, two landscapes also showing at the Wolsey Art Gallery and The Room Upstairs, Ipswich in 1999. Since 1985, she has had solo exhibitions at home and abroad including at Árvore, Porto; Campo Alegre Theatre; the Museum Gallery of Nogueira da Silva, Braga; S. Clara Gallery, Coimbra; the Gomes Alves Gallery in Guimarães and in England locally at Unicorn Gallery Ipswich; University College, Suffolk; Edge Gallery, Suffolk and elsewhere. Nettie returned to Portugal in 2001 where she currently lives and where she teaches drawing at the Escola Superior Artística do Porto.
