Claude Rogers

Claude Maurice Rogers was born at Haringey, London on 24 January 1907, his mother was Mrs Ida Rogers. As a child he lived in Buenos Aires but returned to England to enter St Paul's School where he won a number of art prizes, he then studied at the Slade School of Fine Art 1925–1929 and won a scholarship in 1927 and where his contemporaries were Rodrigo Moynihan (1910-1990), William Menzies Coldstream, Geoffrey Tibble (1909-1952) and others who were associated with the founding of the Euston Road School in 1937. Claude worked in Paris in 1930 and at Gravesend, Kent in 1931, when he lived at the Norwegian Seamen's Mission. A member of the London Artists' Association 1931–1934, exhibiting with them in 1933. He married at Marylebone, London in 1937, the artist Elsie Evelyn Few, and he was a training college lecturer on art in 1939 when they were living at Rodwell House, Baylham, Ipswich. A member of the London Group of Artists 1938 and was its president in 1952 and a member of the New English Art Club from 1943. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Engineers until he was invalided out in 1943, he then taught part-time at Hammersmith College of Art and St Martin's School of Art, and after the war continued his teaching career at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts 1945–1950, the Slade School of Fine Art 1950-1963 and at Reading University, where he was professor of fine art 1963–1972. Living at Somerton, Suffolk and working in London, Claude was a painter of portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes although in his later work the underlying abstract quality of the composition became of more importance. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1941-1967, Leicester Galleries in 1954 and 1960, in 1955 there was a retrospective show at the Hatton Gallery of King's College in University of Durham and a tour and a major retrospective exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1973 and Ben Uri Gallery at 108a Boundary Road, London NW8 0RH in 1992-1993. Awarded an O.B.E. in 1959, Claude Maurice Rogers died at 36 Southwood Lane, London N.W.6, on 18 February 1979.
