COLLYER, Mildred Helen

Mildred Helen Collyer was born at Falkenham, Felixstowe, Suffolk on 5 May 1872, eldest of the two daughters of Revd Daniel Collyer (1848-25 July 1924), clergyman of the Church of England, and his wife Helen Augusta née Preston (22 July 1847-January 1924), second daughter of Revd Robert Preston, vicar of Swaffham Priors, Cambridgeshire, who married at St Stephen's Church, Bayswater on 6 April 1871. In 1881, Daniel and his wife were living at Castle Acre Vicarage, Norfolk but Mildred was not with them but in 1891, Mildred was a 19-year-old student, living at 89 Warwick Road, Kensington, London. In 1911, Mildred was a 39-year-old artist painter, living at Wymondham Vicarage, Norfolk with her parents, 62-year-old Daniel, the local vicar, and 63-year-old Helen Augusta with two indoor servants. A flower, portrait and figure painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing her portraits at Brook Street Art Gallery, London in 1922 and in 1933 at Cumberland House, Portsmouth, a linocut 'Canterbury Bells'. She also exhibited at the Women's International Art Club, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, Redfern Gallery, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and Royal Miniature Society. A member of the Woodpecker Sketch Club, later named the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, 1910-1911 from Wymondham and from London, also a member of Ipswich Art Club 1923-1924 from Octogon House, Mill Lane, Dedham, Essex and again 1930-1934 but does not seem to have exhibited again. In 1939, Mildred Helen Collyer was an unmarried retired artist, living at Willows, Dedham, Essex where she died on 18 March 1955, aged 82, she was unmarried. Collyer was the author, with E. Patrick Dampier, of 'When we Wake' (1937).
