WOODPECKER SKETCH CLUB

1888 - ?

Woodpecker Sketch Club, Norwich, so named because they chipped away at wooden engraving blocks, was founded in 1888, when founder member Catherine Maude Nichols was elected President, a position that she held for some 34 years until her death being succeeded by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh (23 January 1868–15 August 1926). It was renamed the Woodpecker Art Club and in 1927 the Woodpeckers merged with the Norwich Art Circle, which was founded in 1885, and renamed Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle.
