CHAPMAN, Martin

Martin H. Chapman was born at Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1930, son of Joseph Chapman and his wife Sarah née Nathan, who married at Ecclesall Bierlow in 1927. Martin studied at Goldsmiths College 1946-1949, then at the Royal College of Art 1951-1954. He married at Sudbury, Suffolk in 1957, Adella Chapman née Lythgoe. A painter in oil and has an extensive knowledge of the history of art and has lectured part-time at private collections, including that of art dealer Gustav Delbanco (1903-1997), who was a partner in Roland Browse & Delbanco. Martin works from his home in Hitcham, Suffolk, but also in Cornwall and Dorset and later from his studio at Margaret Catchpole's Cottage, Brandeston, Suffolk.
