PACKARD, Winifred

1871 - 1960

Winifred Packard, was born at Grove House, Bramford, Suffolk on 9 September 1871 and baptised at Bramford exactly three months later, daughter of Sir Edward Packard [q.v.] and his wife Ellen née Turner (4 February 1847-21 April 1927), who married at Ipswich in May 1867. Educated by a governess at her home in Bramford and studied at Ipswich Art School passing her model drawing examinations in 1888 and in 1892 awarded prizes for her art work in the categories of 'shading from the cast' and 'groups of still life in oil or watercolour' and later that year passed her drawing examinationss with a first class. A watercolour landscape painter and although not a member, exhibited at Ipswich Art Club in 1894 'The River Ness'. She married at Bramford Church on 28 October 1896, George Fraser Handcock (1857-1928), an executive engineer on the Madras Public Works Department. In 1911, a 39 year old, living at Ashby St Ledgers, Northamptonshire with her 53 year old husband, now manager of an estate, with their three daughters, Mary Gladys (1898-1944) and Winifred Fraser [Hopkins q.v.], both born at born Madras, India, and newly born Barbara Fraser (1911-1939), born at Ashby St Ledgers, they kept a professional nurse and three further indoor staff. Her husband George was of 47 Combe Park, Bath when he died at the Forbes Fraser Hospital, Combe Park on 22 March 1928. Her unmarried sister Katherine Mary Packard [q.v.], on her death in 1951, left Winifred a half share in her estate. Winifred, who spent some time in South Africa in the 1930s-1950s, was of Hazelmere, Bramford, Ipswich when she died at Brooke House Nursing Home, Henley Road, Ipswich on 30 September 1960.
