PACKARD, Katherine Mary
Katherine Mary Packard was born at Grove House, Bramford, near Ipswich on 1 November 1869, daughter of Sir Edward Packard and his wife Ellen née Turner (4 February 1847-21 April 1927), who married at Ipswich on 23 May 1867, Katherine's sisters included Celia Packard, Sylvia Packard and Winifred Packard. Educated by a governess at home and she studied at Ipswich Art School, passing her drawing examinations in 1888 and winning prizes for her painting in 1891. A member of Ipswich Art Society 1891-1950 and a regular annual exhibitor showing at least eighty-three works between 1889-1949. In 1889 she exhibited from Grove House, Bramford watercolours, 'Chrysanthemums' and 'Wild Roses', in 1890 'Spring Flowers' and 'Japanese Anenomes', in 1891 'Walberswick' and 'Gathering Clouds', in 1892 'Harvest in the North' and 'Cottages at Bramford' later subjects were local scenes and views in Scotland and Cornwall and some Indian subjects, others included in 1898 'From Pin Mill', in 1899 'Cromer', 'In Ipswich Dock' and 'Sproughton Lock in October', in 1901 'Boers Prison Camp, Bellar, India', and 'Monsoon Remeneny', in 1907 'Old Houses, Dedham', in 1920 'November in Cornwall', in 1923 'The Street of Green Shutters, Montreuil-sur-Mer' and a pen & colour drawing 'Flowering in June', in 1925 she had two watercolours on display 'The Royal Naval College, Greenwich' and 'In a Little Port in France'. In 1933 she exhibited at Ipswich from c/o Mrs Farrar, Links Avenue, Felixstowe, Suffolk, this was her sister's Celia's home, two watercolours, 'The Yachting Creek, Bosham' and 'Mist of Skye' but in 1935 exhibited from 9 Cavendish Crescent, Bath two oils, 'Letici, Italy, from a Balcony' and a sketch 'A Hill Town in Italy' and in 1937 she exhibited from The Grove, Church Road, Fleet, Hampshire 'Low Tide on the Deben' and a watercolour 'Sketch at Pin Mill. In 1939 she was living with her elder brother, Turner Packard at 'Poplar Tree', Copdock, near Ipswich, and exhibited in 1941, 'Poplar Tree Garden' and 'Suffolk Landscape'. Katherine Mary Packard died at Gipping Weir, Great Blakenham, Ipswich on 21 January 1951, she was unmarried.
