FENTON, John Warren

1901 - 1973

John Warren Fenton was born at Ipswich on 20 November 1901, youngest child of Alfred John Fenton (1867-28 June 1914), a plasterer, and his wife Emma Jane née Driver (1868-1936), who married in the Samford district of Suffolk in 1889. In 1911, John was a 9-year-old living at 43 Woodhouse Street, Ipswich with his parents, 44-year-old Alfred and 43-year-old Emma with two siblings, Fred Oliver 21 and Eleanor Louise 17. In 1939, a tanner's lime yard foreman, living at 540 Spring Road, Ipswich with several of his siblings. It was not until he was in his mid-forties, when living at 47 Romney Road, Ipswich, that he took up painting being influenced by Leonard Squirrell until he evolved his own style. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1949-1972 exhibiting from 71 Leopold Road, Ipswich in 1948 a watercolour 'The Orwell at Ipswich', in 1949 three watercolours 'The Green Lake', 'Pin Mill' and 'By Framlingham Castle' and two in 1950 'Church Farm, Tuddenham' and 'Foxhall Heath' and was a regular annual exhibitor, his last being in 1972 when he exhibited four watercolours 'Winter, Chelsworth, Suffolk', 'Letheringham Mill', 'Winter, Combs' and 'Woodbridge Mill 1956'. He also exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. His watercolour 'Spring Landscape' was exhibited the Ipswich Art Club centenary in 1974. John Warren Fenton died at 71 Leopold Road, Ipswich on 23 January 1973.
