Claire Hamburger

Claire Miranda Hamburger was born in 1958, the daughter of poets Michael Hamburger (22 March 1924-7 June 2007) and his wife Anne Ellen File (10 September 1928–14 July 2023) known as Anne Beresford, who married in 1951, they had three children: Mary Anne, a teacher and visual artist, Richard, a dealer in first edition books and the husband of Julie Noad, and Claire. Claire grew up in South London and studied at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts 1975–1978, gaining her B.A. (hons) degree in Painting and at the University of East Anglia. Claire works as a painter, poet, and writer, she also plays music, and these art forms have preoccupied her all her life, and have overlapped, informing each other in her work. Claire has variously been a teacher, community artist and, now, counsellor. She has a strong belief in humanity and humanitarian causes, and in the relationship between nature and humanity her visual art often draws inspiration from nature and the English landscape. Much of her writing reflects this. She has worked as a painter and community artist, exhibiting her artwork locally in regions like Norfolk and Suffolk She often publishes or registers her work under variations of her name, including Claire Hamburger and Ms Claire Miranda Hamburger.
