David 'Mouse' Cooper

David Cooper known as David 'Mouse' Cooper, his father worked in the racing industry, and David grew up surrounded by horses and from an early age showed talents at both sitting on a horse and in drawing. By the time David left school the family had moved to London where his father ran a butcher's shop in the East End. At school David excelled in art, gaining a grade 'O' and on completion of his 'A' level a scholarship at Goldsmiths College but financially was unable to attend when David’s second love drew him into racing, where he became an apprentice jockey. He worked in racing yards in both Lambourn in Berkshire and Newmarket in Suffolk and reached the position of head lad in the racing yard and painted as a hobby throughout all of this time selling many of his works of racing scenes to friends and colleagues within the industry. He then worked as an Animal Health Technician at Rossdales Equine Hospital in Newmarket, during this time he studied at college, achieving a City and Guilds of London in art at West Suffolk College. In 2005 he was offered a full-time place at the Anglia Ruskin University to read fine arts and graduated in 2007 with a BA (hons) in Art and Illustration and followed this with a teaching certificate. David has inevitably been influenced by the equine artists who have gone before him, particularly Alfred Munnings, George Stubbs (25 August 1724–10 July 1806) and Lucy Kemp-Welsh (20 June 1869–27 November 1958) and was fortunate to live in Newmarket, as between the Racehorse Museum and the Jockey Club Rooms there are around a dozen Munnings and Stubbs paintings to enjoy. David is a figurative artist now living and working in Framingham, Norfolk and divides his time between teaching and painting.
