James Lockhart was born in Oban, Scotland and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art, in London where he was awarded the Leverhulme Scholarship, his tutors included Patrick Symons (1925–1993) and Trevor Felcey (1945-). For many years James made his living as a successful interior designer with clients such as BP, the Chairman of OPEC and the celebrity Katie Price. Over recent years he has divided his time between London and Europe and sometimes New Zealand in the winter months. Around 2021 he moved from London to Suffolk where he had a solo exhibition at the Ballroom Arts Gallery in Aldeburgh and is a member of Aldeburgh Beach Lookout Arts Club also showing at the Aldeburgh Gallery. James has exhibited throughout the UK including at Somerset House and the Royal Academy, also in New Zealand.
