COURT GALLERY

? - ?

The Court Gallery at Sutton Hoo in Woodbridge, Suffolk displays replicas of the finds from the Sutton Hoo excavations, which are considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in the British Isles. Sutton Hoo is the site of two early medieval cemeteries, one of which contains a ship burial that dates to the early 7th century. The discovery of the ship burial in 1939 by Basil Brown, an amateur archaeologist, led to a significant revision of how the early Anglo-Saxons in Britain were perceived. The original finds are now part of the British Museum's collection. The 2001 Visitor Centre was designed by van Heyningen and Haward Architects for the National Trust. Their work included the overall planning of the estate, the design of an exhibition hall and visitor facilities, car parking and the restoration of the Edwardian house to provide additional facilities. Suffolk artists who have worked or exhibited at an event held at the Court Gallery include Jelly Green, Penny Healey, Carol Pask, Kate Reynolds, Cyndi Speer and Jenny Windle.
