THOMSON, Jessie Elizabeth

1874 - 1952

Jessie Elizabeth Thomson was born at Stowmarket, Suffolk on 20 March 1874, daughter of John Thomson (c1842-13 January 1905), a journalist, and his wife Elizabeth Pace, daughter of William Pace, a miller of North Shields, who married at Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland on 18 January 1869. By 1881 the Thomson family had moved to 16 Odsey Street, West Derby and in 1891 young Jessie was a 17-year-old art student, lodging at 15 Albion Square, Hackney. Her father then moved to Liverpool when Jessie then studied at the Liverpool School of Art. In 1901, Jessie was a 27-year-old art teacher, living at 145 Bedford Street, Liverpool with her parents, 59-year-old John, a journalist sub-editor, born in Scotland and 57-year-old Elizabeth, born in North Shields and three other children, John 31, and Helen 29, both born at Stowmarket and Margaret 21, born at Liverpool. Her father died in 1905 but the family continued to live at Bedford Street, Liverpool. Jessie was a painter in oil and watercolour, a miniaturist, black & white and pastel artist who exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery; Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art 1897-1934 from Liverpool. In 1939 Jessie was an art teacher living at 6 Keswick Road, Wallasey, Cheshire, together with her sister Helen. Jessie Elizabeth Thomson died at Liverpool in 1952, aged 78, she was unmarried. She signed her works 'Jessie E. Thomson' or 'J. E. Thomson' in block letters.
