The Society of Scottish Artists was founded in 1891 when a group of thirty artists met in Edinburgh to discuss the forming of a new Society, separate from the Royal Scottish Academy and was formed with a view to holding an Annual Exhibition in Edinburgh, to give an inducement to the younger artists to produce more important and original works by providing hanging space for such works. The opportunity was also taken to obtain for the Society’s Exhibition examples of all Schools of Modern Art from distinguished living Artists. It held its first exhibition in 1892 at the then named the Royal Institution afterwards known as the Royal Scottish Academy Gallery, Edinburgh. The Society of Scottish Artists first President was Robert Noble (1857-1917) and they are the largest artist-led organisation in Scotland. Suffolk artists who exhibited with the Society of Scottish Artists include Felicity Katherine Sarah Askew; Arabella Crum-Ewing; Tom Kelly and Zoë Rubens.
