Westminster School of Art

The Westminster School of Art at 18 Tufton Street, Deans Yard, Westminster, was part of the old Royal Architectural Museum. There was an Elementary Drawing School located in Westminster which started in 1852, this was a forerunner to Westminster School of Art which commenced taking in pupils in 1876 at its premises on Tufton Street. In 1904 the art school merged with the Westminster Technical Institute and moved to Vincent Square, Westminster. Principals included William Mouat Loudan (c1860-September 1925) 1904-1918, Walter John Bayes (31 May 1869-21 January 1956) 1918-1934, and Robert Kirkland Jamieson (19 January 1881-1950) in the 1930s. Well-known alumni and teachers include Henry Mayo Bateman (15 February 1887-11 February 1970), Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (21 August 1872-
16 March 1898), Robert Polhill Bevan (5 August 1865-8 July 1925), David Garshen Bomberg (5 December 1890-19 August 1957); John Leith Craxton (3 October 1922-17 November 2009), Mark Gertler (9 December 1891-23 June 1939), Duncan James Corrowr Grant (21 January 1885-8 May 1978). Bernard Meninsky (28 July 1891-12 February 1950), John Morley, George Elmslie Owen, Frank Short, Walter Richard Sickert (31 May 1860-22 January 1942) and Ethel Walker (9 June 1861-2 March 1951). Suffolk artists students included Edith Helena Adie, Edward Ardizzone, Denise Broadley, Cecil Ross Burnett, Alan Francis Clutton-brock, Rosalie Eugenie De Meric,Muriel Olive Cecile Goulden, Alfred Hartley, Francis Edwin Hodge, Rose Mead, Jane Moncur, David Muirhead, Bernard Reynolds, Walter Westley Russell, Margaret Tempest, Allan Walton, and John Millar Watt. It was still open to students until the early 1970s but has now closed.
