ADIE, Edith Helena

1864 - 1947

Edith Helena Adie was born at Upper Tooting, London on 27 December 1864, second child and eldest daughter of Scott Adie (1822-6 October 1883), a woollen draper, and his wife Elizabeth Hannah née Everall (1835-27 April 1917), who married at St Giles, London in 1860. In 1871, Edith was a 6-year-old, living at Upper Tooting, Wandsworth with her parents, 48-year-old Scott and 35-year-old Elizabeth with siblings, Millicent 4, Alice 2 and newly born William. Edith studied at South Kensington School of Art, at Westminster School of Art and at the Slade School of Fine Art. In 1911, a 45-year-old artist, living at 9 Brechin Place, South Kensington, London with her widowed mother and sibling brother Scott Adie 49, and they retained four indoor servants. Edith spent some time teaching art in Italy and during the First World War Edith visited Australia where she exhibited her work also exhibiting at the Royal Academy; the Royal Horticultural Society and was a member of the British Watercolour Society. A watercolour artist and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1920-1922, exhibiting from 4 Suffolk Place, Sevenoaks, Kent in 1920 two paintings, 'Colderadi, from Bordighera' and 'Near Bordighers', four pictures in 1921 'Mundaring Weir, W. Australia', 'Lake Como', 'Vanity' and another (262). Queen Mary of Teck (1867-1953) commissioned Edith to produce a Royal gift for Mary, the Princess Royal (1897-1965). After Edith had travelled to Australia in 1915, she visited New York in 1918 and Gibraltar in 1933. In 1939 she was living on 'private means' at The Old House, Michelmersh Court, Romsey, Hampshire and later lived at 5a South Park, Sevenoaks. Edith Helena Adie died at the Ormiston Hotel, Oak Lane, Sevenoaks on 16 May 1947, aged 82, she was unmarried.
