ARTS SOCIETY

? - ?

The Arts Society was founded in 1968 when eleven societies joined together to form the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies. NADFAS became a registered charity in 1970 and underwent a period of rapid expansion with the creation of many new Societies across the UK and with the launch of key initiatives such as Church Recording, Young Arts and Heritage Volunteering. Now a worldwide organisation based on a love of the Arts in all its forms. With around 360 local Decorative and Fine Arts Societies in the UK, mainland Europe and the Antipodes, its principal objective is the promotion and advancement of the aesthetic education of the public. Other aims include the cultivation, appreciation and study of the Arts, and the giving of aid to the preservation of our national artistic heritage for the benefit of the public.

The society’s year runs from October to the following July with nine lectures which are held on the first Monday of the month except when a bank holiday postpones the lecture to the following week. These informal occasions open with an illustrated lecture. At illustrated lectures from experts, chosen for their knowledge, presentational skills and entertainment value, speak on a wide variety of topics: architecture, artists and designers, china, glass, painting, music, furniture, sculpture, jewellery. The visits may include country houses, exhibitions, gardens and places of interest.Days of Special Interest also take place in which subjects are studied in greater depth. They organise outings to historical and cultural venues and an annual 4–5-day home or overseas tour.
