John Hill

John Ariel Ledger Hill was born at Pinehurst Bassett, North Stoneham, Hampshire on 10 April 1905, second son of Arthur James Ledger Hill (26 July 1871-6 September 1950), a shipowner, and his wife Grace Lilian Mercer (27 November 1872-3 December 1949), eldest daughter of Charles Mercer of Lansdowne, who married at All Saint's Church, Wyke Regis, near Weymouth, Dorset on 30 August 1898. John was educated at Marlborough College and studied at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts 1945–1946 under Lawrence Gowing (1918-1991) and Victor Pasmore (1908-1998). He married at St Margaret's Church, Westminster, London on 10 February 1931 Sheila Grace Hill (24 May 1909-22 March 1991), daughter of George Hill, and in 1939 an interior decorator living at 31 Maida Avenue, Paddington, London with his wife Sheila. He was the brother of the artist (Arthur) Derek Hill (6 December 1916–30 July 2000), part of whose large collection of pictures is on display at Mottisfont Abbey, a National Trust property in Hampshire and included is John Hill’s 'Regent’s Canal at Maida Avenue, Winter'. John Hill exhibited at the Royal Academy from Aldeburgh, Suffolk in 1983 also showing at Redfern Gallery, London and elsewhere. John Ariel Ledger Hill died at Brick Kiln Cottage, Warren Hill, Aldeburgh on 26 October 1988 leaving an estate of just under £1 million. He signed his work J H.
