ALEXANDER, Mary Ann

1815 - 1913

Mary Ann Alexander was born at Needham Market, Suffolk on 20 November 1815, daughter of Samuel Alexander (16 June 1773-3 May 1838), banker, and his wife Rebecca née Biddle (1777-13 December 1849), who married Kingston, Croydon, Wandsworth Quakers on 28 February 1805, Mary's brother was Samuel Alexander. Mary married at Needham Market, Suffolk, on 27 December 1850, Henry Shewell Corder (16 May 1814-8 March 1912), a linen draper, and they had a son Henry (1855-1944) and a daughter Marianne (1857-1947) who married Herbert Marriage in 1878. In 1811, the Alexander family moved to the newly built 'Goldrood' at Ipswich from where Mary Ann, between 1840 and 1850, painted a series of pictures including albums 'The Goldrood Books' which comprises paintings of Goldrood House, internal and external, views and poems, these are at the Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich. The Alexander's moved out of Goldrood in 1850 and by 1871 the Corder's had passed on their shop in Ipswich and were farming at Writtle, Chelmsford, Essex and from where Mary Ann made another album dated 1864, of twenty-one watercolours of Rollestone Farm, Writtle and the surrounding areas, views include the farmhouse, the garden with gardener and children, Lower Ewelands with ploughman and Writtle Reading-Room and Library etc. Mary Ann Corder died at Chelmsford, Essex on 3 May 1913.
