Michael Richards

Michael John Richards was born in March 1953. He has drawn since he was old enough to hold a pencil and is a self-taught artist specialising in illustration, still life and dog portraits. Michael studied at Middlesex University 1972-1975 gaining a B.A. (hons) degree in English & American Literature with Linguistica. After twenty years living and working abroad, he returned to Suffolk working full-time for a Suffolk book publisher from where he retired as International Sales & Marketing Director in 2021. He commenced practising drawing and painting more seriously, attending workshops and courses by Annie Rice, Ed Cooper, Annabel Mednick and Helen Gilbart and workshops at Emily Ball Seawhite Studios at East Sussex and another in France led by the still life and marine painter, Lowestoft born John Button. Working in pen and ink, coloured pencils and acrylic, he values drawing as an end in itself rather than simply a precursor to painting. A member of the Ipswich Art Society he has exhibited in a number of mixed shows and won the Crane Kalman Award at the Society of Graphic Fine Arts Annual Exhibition in 2016. He has also illustrated 'Inside Conducting' by Christopher Seaman. In 2016 he exhibited for the first time with the Society of Graphic Fine Art in London and was awarded a prize for one of his submissions.
