RUSHTON, Winifred
Winifred Rushton was born at Ashfield Terrace, Ryton, Durham on 30 November 1901, daughter of George Robert Rushton and his wife Edith née Ash (21 March 1872-19 February 1954), who married at Gateshead in 1900 and in 1911 were living at 31 Corder Road, Ipswich. Winifred was educated at Ipswich High School for Girls and studied at Ipswich School of Art and at Brighton School of Art. She obtained a certificate of the Board of Education and a First-Class City and Guilds of London Art School and was a mistress at Eastbourne School of Arts and Crafts. A designer and craftswoman, embroiderer, weaver, illuminator, and leather worker, she exhibited at Eastbourne Society of Artists and Ipswich Fine Art Club from The Outlook, Carew Road, Eastbourne. Winifred married at Medway, Kent in 1936, [Roger] Harris Brand (19 May 1894-13 December 1975), a political agent, and in 1939 were living at 292 City Way, Rochester, Kent. Winifred Brand died at Paignton, Devon on 3 January 1983. She signed her work 'W. Rushton' in block letters.
