ROWLAND, Stanley Chamberlain

1877 - 1949

Stanley Chamberlain Rowland was born at Hampton, Middlesex on 3 June 1877, son of Frederick Arthur Alexander Rowland (30 December 1849-September 1933), a solicitor, and his wife Catherine née Laflin (28 August 1850-2 October 1940), who, as Kate Laflin, married at Strand, London in 1869. In 1881, Stanley was a 3-year-old, living at 33 Regent Square, St Pancras, London with his 31-year-old father and 30-year-old mother, with siblings Percy Fritz 10, Maria Catherine 9, Ethel Theresa 8, Alton 7 and Henrietta 5. Stanley was educated at St Paul's School, London and at the University of London and studied art at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. He graduated M.A. in 1912 and was senior classical master at Strand School in London. An artist in watercolour and an etcher and in 1939 was living at Mill House, Hartest, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk with his widowed mother and two unmarried sisters Maria and Henrietta, both retired schoolteachers. Stanley Chamberlain Rowland died at Hartest, Suffolk on 25 April 1949, he was unmarried. He signed his works 'Stanley Rowland' or 'S. C. R.'.
