BRADFORD, Dorothy Elizabeth

1896 - 1986

Dorothy Elizabeth Bradford was born at University Arms, St Andrew the Great, Cambridge on 11 March 1896 and baptised on 6 April 1896, daughter of Marcus Dennis Bradford (23 November 1865-26 July 1948), hotel proprietor, and his first wife Elizabeth Jane Mason (9 March 1871-21 October 1898), youngest daughter of Alfred Mason of 18 Mill Lane, Cambridge, who married at St Botolph's Church, Cambridge on 11 April 1893, Marcus married secondly at Wandsworth, London in 1903 Kate née Newens. In 1911, Dorothy was a 15-year-old scholar, living at 3 Park Terrace, Cambridge with her 45-year-old father and 33-year-old stepmother with stepsiblings Marcus Newens 5, John Eric 4 and Joyce Kathleen 3, all born at Cambridge. Dorothy was educated at The Perse School, Cambridge and at St Felix School, Southwold, Suffolk, and she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London where she was awarded prizes for portrait & figure painting. In 1939, on 'private means and trained in nursing', living at 14 Wilberforce Road, Cambridge with another single lady, Jennyson Petrino Edmond Hughina Green (born 14 November 1893), also living on own means and trained in nursing. Elected member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art and working in oils, pencil and watercolours, Dorothy exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 1921-1950 also exhibiting at the Phoenix Art Club in Lavenham, Suffolk, New English Art Club, and the Royal Glasgow Institute also in Canada, New Zealand, New York, and Vienna. Dorothy Elizabeth Bradford was living at Newmarket, Suffolk when she died at Eastcott Nursing Home, Calford Green, Kedington, Haverhill, Suffolk on 24 July 1986, she was unmarried. She signed her works 'Dorothy E. Bradford' and is often conflated with Dorothy Kathleen Bradford née Bassano (2 April 1918-17 June 2008).
